In 1979 it became a part of UNESCO world heritage. The Dubrovnik Republic, the city - state on the east part of the Adriatic, was the only fortress that could confront the Republic of Venice in the Middle Ages. Built in 13th century and situated between the western section of the city wall and St. Saviours Church, the Walls of Dubrovnik are a series of defensive stone walls surrounding the city. The walls are 1940 meters long with 6 fortresses and very famous as the filming location of Game of thrones.
It is the symbol of Dubrovnik's freedom and the fort was used for the defence of the city. Nowadays the fort is used as a stage for performing Shakespeare's Hamlet which has become the symbol of Dubrovnik Summer Festival.
